By Skip Hawkes/Maine Sports Report
Saturday morning at the Bangor Auditorium, Morgan Chasse scored nine second quarter points as the Crusaders of John Bapst out scored Bangor 16-9 and held on to the seven point lead for a 41-34 win over the Rams. In the boy's game, 12 of 15 Bangor players scored as the Rams cruised to a 52-27 victory over John Bapst during the final day of the John Bapst Preseason Tournament.
In the girl's game John Bapst opened with a 7-0 run with 5:30 left in the first quarter, but Bangor rallied with a 9-2 run the rest of the way for a 9-9 score at the buzzer. Bangor then opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run with 5:49 left in the half to take a 16-9 lead before Chasse went on a scoring spree and helped the Crusaders finish with a 16-2 run to take a 25-18 lead into half time. Bapst and Bangor matched points (16-16) over the second half.
With just two spots on the varsity roster solidified (Morgan Chasse and Sam Maquillan) going into the week-end tournament, the rest of the Crusaders roster was battling for a starting spot. Three players really stood out during the tournament. Kirsty Moriarty probably sealed a starting spot with her outstanding performance in the games. Hillary Keith, a senior transfer from Hermon, has been impressive and could find herself in the starting lineup on opening day. Perhaps the most impressive surprise is the play of Brittany Williams. After a great 3-day tryout performance, Williams impressed everyone with her play during the tournament. Against Bangor, she was the team's leading rebounder with 10 plus she added four points. Williams has displayed outstanding defense throughout, and has stepped up and made a statement.
Chasse scored a game high 16 points to lead the Crusaders and Moriarty added seven points. Williams had four points, Sam Gormley and Paige Martin each had three points, and Jordan Myerowitz, Taylor Edgecomb, Maquillan, and Riley Boyle each chipped in with two points. Bapst had three 3-point buckets, one each by Chasse, Moriarty, and Paige Martin, and they went 8-13 from the free throw line including 5-5 by Chasse.
Hillary Throckmorton paced the Rams with 14 points. Kate Freusenberger scored six points, Kate Treaswell had five points, and Gabriella Grandchamp had four points. Brianna Tocci scored three points and Stephanie Comstock added two points. Bangor went 4-6 from the charity stripe.
