Chasse and Gormley help Crusaders breeze into quarterfinals

Thursday night at the Bangor Auditorium, the No. 2 John Bapst Crusaders were host to No. 15 Rockland in an Eastern Maine prelim game originally scheduled for Tuesday, postponed to Wednesday, and postponed again on Wednesday because of the weather. The long delay between games was of little concern to the Crusaders as they came out strong and breezed past the Tigers for a 63-30 win behind Morgan Chasse with a game high 14 points and Sam Gormley with a double-double 12 points and 11 rebounds. Bapst will face Mt. View of Thorndike in an Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal game scheduled for 9:05 p.m. Friday, February 15 at the Bangor Auditorium.Chasse was on fire early in the first quarter sparking Bapst to a 10-2 run with 4:13 left in the opening period. Bapst led 19-5 at the buzzer, and Chasse piled up 10 points in the quarter, and Sam Maquillan added four points.
The Crusaders all but put the game away in the second quarter out scoring the Tigers 14-4 to take a 33-9 lead at half time. Chasse, Amber Estes, and Gormley each scored four points in the quarter.
John Bapst got a combined eight points from the twin towers Gormley and Hillary Laferriere in the third quarter and out scored Rockland 13-8 for a 46-17 lead heading into the final period. Lindsay Ranquist and Kelsey Sirois each knocked down a 3-point bucket for Rockland in the quarter.In the final period Bapst coach Mike Webb went to his bench leaving only one starter, Laferriere, on the floor. Laferriere left after two minutes had passed in the quarter and was replaced by Gormley, who played just two minutes and was replaced by Senior Libbey Nelson. Lindsey Hayden was a spark off the bench scoring eight points in the quarter, including two 3-point baskets, to lead Bapst to a 17-13 score for the 33 point win.
Chasse topped all scorers with 14 points and Gormley added 12 points to lead John Bapst. Hayden and Laferriere each had eight points, and Maquillan added six points. Eve Jordan and Estes each had four points and Kirsty Moriarty added three points. Bri Hardy and Nelson both chipped in with one point. The Crusaders had three 3-point baskets, two by Hayden and one from Moriarty, and they went 2-10 from the foul line.
Aly Nolan scored eight points and Dana Clark added six points to pace Rockland. Sirois had five points, Erika Felt added four points, Ranquist and Joelle Joyce each scored three points, and Leia Dennison had one point. The Tigers had three 3-point baskets, two by Nolan and one by Sirois, and they went 2-4 from the charity stripe.Maine Sports Report Score Board
