Champions crowned as Maine Basketball Festival 7/8 Grade girls tourney concludes

Sunday the Bangor Y Maine Basketball Festival tourney for 7/8 grade girls continued with all games heading towards the crowning of the "A" Pool and "B" Pool champions at the end of the day.

After a first half 16-16 tie, the Bangor B.Y.B.C outscored Augusta 12-5 in the second half for a 28-21 win and a spot in the semifinal game. Kathryn Treadwell scored a game high 12 points and Danae Johnson added six points to pace Bangor. M. Perry and Beth Elwell each scored five points to lead Augusta in scoring.

Sebasticook doubled up Lincoln 24-12 in the first half and went on to a 50-32 victory. Marissa Shaw scored a game high 17 points and Emilll Reynolds added 14 points to lead the Wildcats in scoring. Collen Albert scored 11 points and Taylor Hawkins had six points to top Lincoln.

For the third time in the two day tournament, the Rockland Eagles picked up a win with a 37-23 victory over the Union 96'ers. Rockland outscored Union 18-9 in the first half to set the tone for the game. The Eagles spread the scoring around with Jessica Veilleux scoring 10 points, Jill Bradbury adding nine points, and both Kennadi Grover and Becky Wellman having eight points. Union 96 was led in scoring by Jamie Hoglund with 10 and Genesis Dicarlo with six points.

Ashley Danforth scored 54% of the Hampden-Doyon points as the Broncos knocked off the Bangor B.Y.B.C. 24-20 in a semifinal matchup. Hampden took early control of the game and outscored Bangor 17-9 in the first half. Although Bangor won the scoring advantage in the second half (11-7), they were not able to overcome the first half deficit. Danforth scored a game high 13 points to lead Hampden. Kathryn Treadwell had seven points and Morgan Johnson five points to lead Bangor in scoring.

Rockland used a 12-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the first half to take a 20-10 lead at the half time break on their way to a 33-26 win over Presque Isle to go undefeated in the tournament and claim the 2008 "B" Pool Championship. Jessica Veilleux scored a game high 12 points to lead the Eagles. Jill Bradbury and Kennadi Grover each added seven points. Hannah Plourde scored three points, and both Becky Wellman and Brighde Curtin chipped in with two points. Veilleux was awarded the "B" Pool Tournament MVP award following the game.

Karlee Bernier and Liza Buck scored six points each to pace Presque Isle. Kayla Girardin and Meredith Stewart each had four points, Meagan Ireland added three points, Chandler Guerrette had two points, and Laurin Ackerson scored one point.

Marissa Shaw scored 19 points in the opening half to lead the Wildcats of Sebasticook to a 30-17 half time lead on their way to a 60-39 victory over Hampden-Doyon to be crowned the 2008 Bangor Y Maine Basketball Festival "A" Pool Champions. Shaw scored a tourney high 29 game points and Mary Badeen added 19 points to lead the Wildcats in scoring. Shaw also recieved the 2008 "A" Pool tourney MVP award following the game.

Ashley Danforth led Hampden with 19 points and Helene Sherburne added five points.
