Bangor Y's Maine Basketball Festival tournaments underway
Saturday morning at the student rec center on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono, the Bangor Y kicked off their 2008 Maine Basketball Festival with 20 7/8 grade girls teams from around the state featured in the opening tournament.
Hampden-Doyon came back from a one point half time deficit to knock off Old Town 47-30 in one of the first games of the morning. Trailing 22-21 at half time, Hampden rebounded with a 26-8 second half for the win. Helene Sherburne scored a game high 14 points to pace Hampden, and Chelsey Kuzio and Ashley Danforth each added 12 points. Old Town was led in scoring by Courtney Treadwell with 12 points and Susie Outman with seven points.
The Bangor Y hung on to a four point lead at half time and held off Carmel for a 35-31 win. Bangor outscored Carmel 18-14 in the first half, and the two teams battled to a 17-17 second half. Kathryn Treadwell scored 12 points and Morgan Johnson added seven points to lead bangor in scoring. Mikayla Treadwell and Emily Tilton each scored 10 points to pace Carmel.
SeDeMoCha used a 13-5 first half to come away with a 29-17 win over Union 96'ers. SeDeMoCha out scored Union 16-12 in the second half. Hilary Kendall scored a game high 12 points and Monica Miles added six points to lead SeDeMoCha in scoring. Jammie Hoglund scored five points and Chelsea Beal added four points for Union 96.
The Rockland Tigers scored 24 points in each half and went on to a 48-37 victory over Ft. Fairfield. The Tigers held a 24-22 lead at half time, but opened up their lead in the second half finishing with a 24-15 score for the 11 point margin of victory. Jessica Veilleux scored a game high 20 points and Jill Bradbury added 14 points to lead Rockland. Amanda Hotham led Ft. Fairfield with 16 points and Danielle Tracy had nine points.
Hampden-Winchester picked up a win with a 27-21 victory over the Lady Jammers. Abby Pyne and Ellie Webb paced Hampden with seven points each. The Jammers were led in scoring by Sam Miller with six points and Rayne Hanke-Ledwith with four points.
Allison Hill and Brook Young sparked Calais to a 34-27 win over Milford. Both Hill and Young scored a game high 14 points to lead Calais. Milford was led by Ashley Abbott with 11 points and Ashley Englund with six points.
Skowhegan over came a two point (15-13) first half deficit in the second half doubling up the Jr Warriors 20-10 for a 33-25 victory. Adriana Martinou scored 10 points and Chey Malloy added nine points to lead Skowhegan in scoring. Kaitlyn Sommers scored a game high 12 points and Katlyn Goodall had six points to pace the Northern Jr Warriors.
Presque Isle breezed to a 53-3 win over Orrington. Chandler Guerrette scored a game high 20 points and Meredith Stewart added 13 points to lead Presque Isle. Amy Currie scored all three Orrington points.
